Human rights activists urged not to kill Konovalov and Kovalev

Statement by the Belarusian human rights with respect to the requirements of the public prosecutor of the death penalty against Dmitry Konovalov and Kovalyov Vladislav.
The statement of the results of the HRC ...
Belarusian human rights activists strongly condemns the requirement of the public prosecutor of the death penalty against Dmitry Konovalov and Vladislav Kovalev, accused in the terrorist attack in Minsk on April 11, 2011.
The Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and the international agreements signed by the State, provide citizens with a natural and inalienable right to life, and fix it right as the highest value.

The death penalty is meaningless.

It is not a perfect fix, does not restore fairness.

It does not lead to repentance and awareness of criminal guilt.

It does not stop other criminals, and only hardens the Society.

Sincerely sharing the grief and suffering of crime victims and their families, we can state that the procedure of the death penalty, adopted in Belarus, where the bodies are not given the shot, is not informed about the burial place and time of death - is inhumane treatment of families of persons sentenced to death.

You must stop the escalation of violence and death.

The death penalty as revenge and the vestige of the medieval brutality is unacceptable from a moral point of view, even if it applies to people whose guilt in the commission of serious crimes is complete and does not cause a reasonable doubt.

However, it is obvious that no law enforcement and the judiciary is not immune from mistakes. But miscarriages of justice can not be corrected after the application of death penalty.

It is impossible to ignore the fact that according to lawyers, human rights activists, some of the victims and ordinary citizens, the investigation of the terrorist attack in the Minsk metro and the entire trial, Dmitry Konovalov and Vladislav Kovalev was not clear and convincing.
